Kayla R. from First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, VA exhibits the highest degree of selfless service and commitment to her community over many years of volunteerism.

Kayla's 30 hours of required community service to earn the Peter's Wish scholarship is spent in "Care by Community" by the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church.  Care by Community is an after-school program for homeless and "at-risk" elementary students from the area.  Kayla helps them with homework, reads to students and listens to students read, assists with school projects, and plays games with them.  The program helps to improve grades, behavior, and self-esteem and provides a constructive place for kids while parents are able to work later into evenings.

Care by Community is just the latest of Kayla's many service endeavors.  She has supported the Noblemen's Christmas toy drives, volunteered for Operation Smile, mentored younger Girl Scouts for badge requirements, and visited with residents at nursing homes and retirement communities.  Like the Peter's Wish other award recipients, her community service list goes on and on...to the benefit of the Virginia Beach community!

Most important, Kayla is a wonderful young woman with great heart and character.  In her Peter's Wish essay, she writes, "I would like to think of myself as someone who notices the needs of those around me and does all in my power to do what I can do to help."

Kayla is truly living Peter’s Wish to have a fulfilled and meaningful life.
